“Almost 75 percent of global travellers would likely travel somewhere known for its food and drinks”

In the times when diversity is a disintegrating virtue in India’s fabric as a nation, the one thing that quite unites us is the country’s food. We remain unanimous in being proud of our varied platter – from the Punjab’s kulchas and Awadh’s spices to Hyderabad’s Biryani and Kerala’s flavours.

And in the country that loves its food, the verdict on India’s favourite gourmet destination is finally out! Amristsar, with its delectable breads and enchanting lassi, has taken the crown, as per Booking.com.The website came to the conclusion after surfing through over 118 million real traveller reviews by its users, for who food stood out as a clear passion, representing a central theme.

Amristsar was closely followed by Hyderabad and Delhi at two and three respectively while Mumbai and Bangalore completed the quintet.

The data also revealed that Asian and South American flavours feature highly in the top ten foodie favourite destinations globally, with Greece, Australia and Spain also included. It was Hong Kong, with its famous dim sum, Sao Paulo with Brazilian barbeque and Tokyo (whose restaurants have accrued more Michelin stars than New York and Paris combined) that topped the international list.Booking.com revealed that when choosing their next travel destination, around 75 percent of global travellers would likely travel somewhere known for its food and drinks.

It’s the millennials who are the most keen to combine travel and food, with 79 percent of travellers between the ages of 18 and 34 considering travelling somewhere that’s specifically known for its gastronomic delights.

Almost one in 10 (8 percent) people have travelled in the last year to fulfill their hobby of fine dining and seven percent for their passion for wine, it added.

“Culinary travel is an ever-growing trend, with travellers planning trips centred on taste-inspired exploration,” commented Pepijn Rijvers, Chief Marketing Officer at Booking.com.

“Not only are people looking for luxury gastronomic experiences, but also sampling local and street food,” he added.
