Remember the time the BJP came out in strong support of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan when was named Gujarat’s brand ambassador? “The real issue is not Amitabh becoming Gujarat’s brand ambassador,” party spokesperson Prakash Javdekar had said at the time, according to the Hindustan Times. “Had it been so, why would his son Abhishek be targeted? This is the worst kind of personal vendetta politics. The first family of the Congress does not like Amitabh… It is this Congress mentality — that the one I dislike will be ostracised and even jailed — that had ushered in the Emergency. This is an attack on art and culture, and also on the very idea of the Indian union.”

It appears that times have changed. A BJP MLA in Maharashtra has approached the police on Tuesday, seeking action against Bachchan and the makers of the popular TV Show, Kaun Banega Crorepati 12 for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments.

“There was an attempt to insult Hindus and create discord between Hindus and Buddhists who have been living in harmony,” Abhimanyu Pawar, BJP legislator from Ausa in Latur district tweeted.

Pawar was referring to a KBC episode that featured social activist Bezwada Wilson and actor Anup Soni in the hot seat opposite Bachchan. They were asked the following question: “On 25th December 1927, Dr. B R Ambedkar and his followers burned copies of which scripture?” The options were: (A) Vishnu Purana (B) Bhagavad Gita, (C) Rigved, and (D) Manusmriti.”

“In 1927, Ambedkar condemned the ancient Hindu text Manusmriti to ideologically justify caste discrimination and untouchability and burned its copies,” Amitabh Bachchan went on to add which annoyed BJP minister Pawar to no end.

“All the four options pertained to Hindu religion. It is clear that the motive behind this question was to hurt the sentiments of Hindus,” Pawar said in his police complaint, according to HT.

“This question spreads the message that Hindu religious scriptures are meant for burning and triggers enmity between Hindus and followers of Buddhism,” he added. On Twitter, many echoed Pawar’s sentiments with some accusing the show of running a “leftist propaganda”. Tweet-happy filmmaker, Vivek Agnihotri also shared a clip from the show on the micro-blogging site and claimed that KBC was “hijacked by Commies”.
