It has almost been a year since we last saw Farhan Akhtar on screen. The actor last featured in The Sky Is Pink with Priyanka Chopra, and received a lot of appreciation for his role in the film. Soon after the release of this film, Akhtar announced his next film titled Toofan. The film went on floors in 2019, and was scheduled to hit the theatres in October 2020. But just like other films, the release date of Akhtar’s film was also shifted indefinitely due to the pandemic.
The makers wanted to wait for the situation to normalise before they release the film in theatres. They were looking for a 2021 date for it, but having realised that things won’t go back to normal anytime soon, they are having second thoughts about the release. Considering the circumstances, the makers have now reportedly decided to opt for a digital release for the film.

A source close to the film’s development informed entertainment news website Bollywood Hungama that director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and the producers of the film are considering an OTT release for Toofan. The source added that the decision came as a surprise for everyone, but the makers are quite firm about it. The film will release on Amazon Prime Video.
Citing the reasons behind this decision, the source added, “Currently theatres are just opening up, and it will be a while before the business returns to normal. Releasing a film in an uncertain atmosphere like this is detrimental to business. But on the other hand, opting for a direct to OTT release, a film-maker is assured of a certain sum that will cover his initial expense. Given this situation, it is obvious why film-makers prefer to release their films on OTT platforms over theatres.”

Farhan Akhtar will be essaying the role of a boxer in Mehra’s directorial. The film also features Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles. Interestingly, Toofan marks Mehra and Akhtar’s second collaboration after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, both being sports-based films.
