The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards is set to take place on September 12 at its usual venue, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in front of a live audience.

 

After the names of the nominees, the names of the performers are now revealed. Lorde, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Camila Cabello, and Machine Gun Kelly are confirmed to take the stage. More performers for the three-hour-long event will be announced in the coming weeks.

These performances would be the debut at the Awards for both Olivia Rodrigo and Machine Gun Kelly. Kelly will bring to the stage the world premiere of his song papercuts while Rodrigo would be performing her record-breaking Good 4 U.

This would mark Lil Nas X’s first VMAs performance since 2019, where he performed Panini, Cabello’s first since 2019 where she broke the internet with her performance of Señorita with Shawn Mendes. Lorde’s would be appearing on the stage after 2017 and would be performing a song from her third studio album, Solar Power, released today, August 20.

 

Lil Nas X and Rodrigo each received five VMA nominations this year, though they aren’t competing in any categories. Lil Nas X’s nods include video of the year for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).” Rodrigo’s include artist of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

Only Justin Bieber and Megan Thee Stallion received more nominations this year. Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, BTS, Drake and Giveon all earned five.

Nominations for social categories including best group and song of the summer will be announced at a later date.

The audience can vote across 14 gender-neutral categories by visiting vma.mtv.com through Friday, September 3. However, voting for best new artist will remain active into the show.

Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ignjatovic, Den of Thieves co-founder, are executive producers for the 2021 VMAs. Barb Bialkowski is helming the position of co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba serve as executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is the executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is the music talent executive.
