It’s plain surprising that we’ve not had a good enough murder mystery in Bollywood since Manorama Six Feet Under. All hopes are now pinned on Ittefaq, the Shah Rukh Khan production starring Sidharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna, which is the remake of the 1969 Rajesh Khanna classic. 

We don’t want to spoil the movie for you, but purists would definitely like to know how different the two movies are. So for the sake of preserving the suspense of the remake, we make a vis-a-vis comparison between the trailers of the two movies to predict how different (or similar) the two movies could be.

(For the uninitiated, both movies revolve around a double murder mystery where a man (husband of the dead woman) is the prime accused. He is paralleled by another woman whose husband is the other person deceased).

The cop is the main guy

So first things first, Akshaye Khanna is being praised by critics and reviewers as the standout performer in the 2017 iteration of the film as opposed to Rajesh Khanna (recreated by Sidharth) who was the soul of the yesteryear Yash Chopra film.

But you would actually expect Akshaye to steal the show especially when he’s sharing screenspace with actors from this generation. Why does this guy not get more work?!

No crazy angle

It’s worth recalling how Rajesh Khanna is declared mentally unfit after an emotional breakdown in the court following his arrest in suspicion of his wife’s murder. He is repeatedly accused as ‘paagal’ in the film and many facts (well apparently at least) are shunned as products of his imagination.

The trailer of the modern-day adaptation though don’t put Sidharth in the same light. Although he is the prime accused, the police hasn’t been shown putting him under unfair scrutiny for being twisted in the head.

Where’s the sister?

The sister of the dead female in the original plays a major role in putting the blame on Rajesh Khanna’s character for the murder. But you don’t see Sidharth’s sister-in-law anywhere in the promo of the Red Chilies production. Maybe there is one and given the secrecy surrounding the promotional campaign for the movie, she hasn’t been revealed to the public yet.
