Veteran singer Bhupinder Singh breathed his last on Monday. At the age of 82, he passed away due to a heart attack, which was confirmed by his wife, Mithali Singh. In a statement released to PTI, she said, “He was admitted to the hospital eight to 10 days ago as he had some infection in the urine. After tests were performed, he tested positive for COVID-19. He passed away at around 7.45 PM due to suspected colon cancer and had COVID-19.”

 

The late singer had a career spanning five decades, during which he sang a number of melodious Bollywood songs. He had worked with other greats from the industry like Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri, RD Burman and Mohmmed Rafi to create a discography that will bear testimony to his legacy.

Here’s a look at some of his best and most memorable tracks. 

Hothon Pe Aisi Baat

Singh and Lata Mangeshkar had lent their voices to this song from the 1967 hit Jewel Thief. The music was composed by SD Burman, and the lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The song also played a pivotal role in the movie as it was used in the lead up to the climax. Even after all these years, it has proven to be a timeless track.

Huzoor Iss Kadar Bhi Na Itra Ke Chaliye

Masoom, which was released in 1983, had several iconic songs in its OST, but Huzoor Iss Kadar Bhi Na Itra Ke Chaliye stands out. Sung by Singh and Suresh Wadekar, the track not only topped desi charts but has also served as the soundtrack to many parties from the days of yore. In the movie, the song plays in the backdrop as Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi’s onscreen romance unfolds.

 

Thodi Si Zamin Thoda Aasmaan

This soulful song from the 1980 movie, Sitara is an expression of love between on-screen actors Mithun Chakraborty and Zarina Wahab. Apart from Singh, legends like Mangeshkar, Gulzar and RD Burman were also a part of the track. The romantic ballad manages to remain relevant even to this day.

Dil Dhoondta Hai

This song from Mausam, which was released in 1976, has two versions — a solo piece, sung by Singh and a duet, where Mangeshkar joins him to give us a melodious track with a slightly faster tempo. When it comes to heartbreaks, this song is in a league of its own. 

 

Kabhi Kisi Ko Mukammal Jahan Nahin Milta

Based on a ghazal, this track is deep and poignant, with lyrics that muse about life. It appeared in the 1981 film, Ahista Ahista, with Singh and Bhosle adding a certain degree of beautiful melancholy to it.
