“I did two scenes in Padmaavat when Ranveer was not available. They needed a back shot of him for a scene where he is talking to Jim Sarbh. Sanjay sir told me to wear Ranveer’s costume and everyone was shocked to see me like that. The DoP called me and said, ‘This was my silver screen debut’,” said the beloved Jaaved Jaffrey’s son.

He was a body double for Ranveer Singh for some scenes in the 2018 Padmaavat, where he also assisted Bhansali.

“I was there on set, in costume and makeup. I hadn’t eaten anything, so I was really stressed. I was a little late, and it took an hour for the prosthetics and for me to get into the look. I learned the script in that one hour. The moment I came out, I was already nervous about doing proper acting in front of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it was technically my ‘silver screen debut’, and there were 500 junior artistes around me, and I had to deliver a whole speech,” he told a media representative.

“Then an assistant director comes to me and shows me Ranveer’s version of the shot, and asks me to replicate his mannerisms. I was like, ‘why couldn’t you have told me before! I was already so tense’. But regardless, I went ahead, I was terrified, I was in bad shape,” he continued.

According to his interview with RJ Siddharth Kannan, Bhansali had faith in him. They would rehearse scenes together and Bhansali would often bestow upon him some advice and suggestions. Originally wanting to make a living with either sport or music, Jaffrey gives credit to Bhansali for turning him into an actor.

About the scene in question, according to him, as he performed the scene, Bhansali would come and direct him on occasion, before realising that he didn’t have to, as his face wouldn’t be seen.

It is an experience he said he will not forget.
