The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will be returning in a physical format this year. After two years of the pandemic, finally people will be able to witness the magic of cinema in Australia. The festival is scheduled to take place from August 12th to 20th in Melbourne. While this will allow people to physically attend the event, they have kept the option of virtual viewership open, too.  

One of the highlights of this season comes in the form of legendary cricketer, Kapil Dev being made the guest of honour of the festival. Dev is looking forward to being a part the celebrations. In a press release, he said, “I truly do believe that sports and cinema are two major cultural experiences for not only Indians but various communities and countries that bind us together. It’s something for decades now that has united people. It’s a deep-rooted emotional connection and love we have for both cinema and sports, and when they come together it’s a rewarding experience for everyone.” Along with him, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Kabir Khan will be seen gracing the festival as well.  

This year, more than 100 films in 23 languages will be screened, going beyond Bollywood, to include documentaries and short films. While the schedule is yet to be announced, Indian artistes are likely to fly down to Melbourne for the festival.  

The Minister for Creative Industries, Steve Dimopolus called the film festival an unmissable event. They have been long-standing supporters of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

The director of the festival, Mitu Bhowmick, has said that Melbourne, being a place filled with cricket and cinema lovers, is a perfect spot for the festival.

Previously, actors like Shahrukh Khan, Tabu, Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar and Rima Das have attended the festival.
