History is laden with instances where world records were set for inane and bizarre reasons. And, the latest addition to the list is Mike Flanagan’s show, The Midnight Club. The American horror series has set a world record by having 21 scripted jump scares in one episode! The incident reportedly took place at the New York Comic Con.  

The panel members of the Guinness World Record were present at the venue and felicitated the team for the unusual feat. In a statement, Flanagan maintained how he detested jumpscares all his life, further adding how he has seen people around him put more jumpscares like this in the shows. It is an easy thing to do because you are just walking up behind someone and smashing things around.  

He further added, “I thought, ‘We’re going to do all of them at once, and then if we do it right, a jump scare will be rendered meaningless for the rest of the series.’ It’ll just destroy it. Kill it finally until it’s dead, but that didn’t happen. They were like, ‘Great! More [scares]!” 

The series would be available for the audience to stream on Netflix starting today. The series is based on a book by Christopher Pike, which goes by the same name.  It is a teen novel that has horror tales from the writer’s pen. The story is set against the backdrop of a Rotterdam Home hospice resided by terminally ill teenagers. Eight residents of the hospice routinely gather at the library at midnight for their club. As eerie as it may sound, the meetings are largely held for the members to exchange and narrate sinister stories.  And that’s not all.

They eventually decide that the first one to die amongst themselves would stay in touch with all of them from the other side. However, things get untoward when they see their plan materialize for real.

The beginning part of the show sees Natsuki (a protagonist) narrating a story. Just then, a boy named Ren spots figures smiling at him from the windows of the houses. The incident occurs on his way to school. And amid all this are the 21 jumpscares.  

The cast features Igby Rigney, Annarah Cymone, Ruth Codd, Zach Gilford, Heather Langenkamp, and Samantha Sloyan in key roles.
