Global sensation Priyanka Chopra Jonas has taken over as the chairperson of the MAMI (Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image) Mumbai Film Festival.

The last person manoeuvring this position was Deepika Padukone, who stepped down earlier this year, about four months ago.

The actor took to social media to make it know that she is taking this responsibility seriously. From the looks of it, big changes can be expected.

“I’ve hit the road running… with ideas, thoughts, and plans on reimagining the festival to find its rightful place in a world that has changed so much in such a short time,” she added in the video. “We’re all consuming film and entertainment very differently now and in the process, we’ve expanded the footprint of the cinema that we watch. I have always been a huge supporter and believer in films from across India and together, we hope to create a strong platform to showcase Indian cinema to the world,” Priyanka said in a statement.

In a minute-and-a-half video she shared on her social media, curation of a new format, keeping in mind the state of the world today, has been paid utmost attention to.

“I’ve always believed that Indian cinema from across every part of the country has so much to offer to the world. It’s a mission that I set for myself and one that is very close to my heart. It was a key objective when I started my production company Purple Pebble Pictures. So, I’m looking forward to expanding and championing this even further,” she said in the video.

She quoted director Martin Scorsese in the caption, “Now more than ever we need to talk to each other, to listen to each other and understand how we see the world, and cinema is the best medium for doing this.”

Instead of a film festival that happens over a week, Jio MAMI is now going to pan out from October 2021 to March 2022. From October onwards until January, under the Year Round Programme, apart from Dial M For Films it will hold select digital screenings and masterclasses featuring talent from all over the world. There are talks of a hybrid, 5-day festival but that would depend on the intensity of the Covid-19 infections in that time and area.
