The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, today, published a list of 819 personalities who have been invited to join the organisation.

Actors Hrithik Roshan and Alia Bhatt, casting directors Nandini Shrikent and Tess Joseph, costume designer Neeta Lulla, documentary filmmakers Nishtha Jain and Amit Madheshiya, visual effects supervisors Vishal Anand and Sandeep Kamal and film score composer Nainita Desai are among the Indian film personalities who have been invited and if they accept the membership, they’ll have voting privileges at the 93rd Academy Awards which are scheduled to be held on the 25th of April this year.

75 of the new invitees are Oscar nominees whereas 15 of them have won the Academy Award in the past. Zendaya, John David Washington, filmmakers Lulu Wang, Ari Aster and actors Ana De Armas, Brian Tyree Henry, and Florence Pugh of Little Women fame have also been invited.

“We look forward to continuing to foster an Academy that reflects the world around us in our membership, our programs, our new Museum, and in our awards,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson in a statement.

The Academy, earlier this year, mentioned that one of their primary goals is inclusivity and that shows in their invites. While women comprise 45 percent of the new invitees, 36 percent of the 819 invited are people of colour.

Furthermore, for the first time in its history, the Academy is also giving member agents voting privileges for the first time. According to Indiewire, the 111 member agents who are current members of the Academy have been moved from Associates status to the Members at Large category.

The reason behind agents being denied voting privileges was because they were considered transactional parts of the movie-making business and not directly involved in the filmmaking process.

One possible reason behind the Academy reaching out and adding agents to the voting pool is to perhaps, ensure that there are more varieties of movies that will rescue the show’s declining ratings.
