Anurag Kashyap’s alternative take on the famous Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel in 2009 was Bollywood’s last tryst with Devdas. Under the direction of Sudhir Mishra, the next adaptation of the legendary tragedy comes in the form of Daas Dev, which releases this weekend. It stars Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chadda in lead roles and is said to reflect the real troubles of our times.

The bar has been set high for the movie to find a place among Bollywood’s most memorable Devdas adaptations. Nonetheless it’s a good occasion to relive the best of the Bollywood-Devdas union.

Dev.D (2009)

The most modern interpretation of Chattopadhyay’s book, this Abhay Deol-starrer will be remembered for its dark visuals, great music and of course the sex. It was also a breakthrough of sorts for Mahi Gill and Kalki Koechlin both of whom played pivotal roles in the saga.

Devdas (2002)

From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s penance in O Piya to Madhuri Dixit’s remorse in Maar Daala, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas was one of Bollywood’s most ambitious projects from that era. You’d be lying if you deny having a lump in your throat as Shah Rukh Khan dies a painful death in the end.

The original Devdas, KL Saigal paved the way for the character to become a popular figure cutting across generations. Directed by Pramathesh Barua, the movie also starred the likes of Jamuna Barua in prominent roles.
