Happy Birthday Mike Tyson: 5 Times Sportsmen Bit Off More Than They Could Chew

Remember when Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ears twice?

American former professional boxer and icon, Mike Tyson reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion and is a living legend in his field. He’s remembered for some of the most brutal knockouts in history and of course, for that infamous incident when he bit Evander Holyfield’s ears twice and was disqualified. This was perhaps one of the most interesting and amusing incidents in boxing history.

In honour of all things teethy, we bring  you four other times sportsmen used their jaws instead of their skills:

1. During the 2014 World Cup, Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez appeared to bite Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini on his shoulder.

2. Mentalfloss reports that New Zealand’s Sean Fitzpatrick had his ear bitten by South African rugby player Johan Le Roux during a match in 1994. He was punished with an 18-month suspension and had this to say: “For an 18-month suspension, I feel I probably should have torn it off.”

3. During the 1983 NBA playoffs, many mistakenly believed that Boston Celtics’ Danny Ainge had bitten Atlanta’s Wayne Rollins but it was Ainge who had to get stitches and a tetanus shot due to Rollins’ biting his finger.

4. Again, according to a Mentalfloss report, an English rugby player had to face an 80-week ban in 2008 for leaving an opponent with “a partial amputation of the right index finger.”
