According to AFP, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 760th career goal in Juventus’ 2-0 Italian Super Cup win over Napoli on Wednesday, he was hailed as the top goalscorer of all time. He was said to have surpassed Austrian-Czech striker Josef Bican for the most goals scored for club and country in football history, with his tally now at 760.

The Juventus forward, who has continued to defy his years since arriving from Real Madrid for around £100m in 2018, was said to have moved to the top of the all-time scoring charts, with his strike against Napoli. It was also said that the 35-year-old five-time Ballon d’Or had moved past Brazil legend Pele, Romario, and Ronaldo’s Barcelona rival Lionel Messi.

However, according to the news agency, doubts persist as to who actually holds the record for scoring the most goals. With five goals for Sporting Lisbon, 118 for Manchester United, 450 for Real Madrid, 85 for Juventus, and 102 for Portugal, there is some skepticism over Ronaldo’s own tally.

The Portuguese forward, who turns 36 next month, is the undisputed holder of several records, easily the leading scorer for Real Madrid and his country, and above Lionel Messi in the Champions League goalscoring charts.

But uncertainty arises from the totals of his rivals from previous eras, with the likes of Brazilian duo Pele and Romario both claiming to have netted more than 1,000 goals. Last month, Barcelona’s Messi surpassed Pele’s recognized total of 643 goals for a single club, but Santos swiftly countered, saying the three-time World Cup winner racked up 1,091 goals for them, including those in friendlies.

According to Reuters, Czech Football Association has disputed claims that the Juventus striker has broken the all-time goalscoring record, insisting that he still needs 62 to surpass Josef Bican’s tally.

The all-time top goalscorer title is much contested, and soccer’s world governing body, FIFA, does not keep an official record.

Even if Ronaldo did not break the all-time record, his tally of 760 goals is still quite remarkable.
