The BCCI (Board of Cricket Council of India) is looking at the September and October window to continue IPL 2021. This would mean that the time frame between the India-England series and the start of the IPL would be significantly less, and players would have to transfer to their respective bubbles as soon as possible. The England series is scheduled to end on September 14, 2021, and the World T20 is supposed to start in mid-October, precisely giving the BCCI less than a month to conduct the remainder of the IPL.

IPL 2021 began on April 10, and considering the Covid situation in India, it was postponed indefinitely. Other reasons for its postponement were that several IPL squads we’re tested positive for Covid-19. This prompted the BCCI to stop the tournament immediately, and take adequate measures for players to go home. The BCCI sent planes to countries like Maldives, New Zealand, West Indies, amongst other countries. They kept the players’ safety in mind. They had the support of the Indian Government, other cricket boards, and their coordination with all these organisations in such a short period is commendable.

It’s not even a month since the postponement that the BCCI has started to look for an alternative to continuing the IPL. They have already spoken to the UAE government once again, and requested them to host the IPL for a second successive year. The IPL last year was successfully conducted in the UAE with rarely any positive cases in the squads. UAE and BCCI took almost all precautions for the safety of the players, and will make sure they do this time as well if the tournament takes place there. There is also an option of conducting IPL in England which would be more feasible also. But it remains to be seen what decision the BCCI takes, and it should be taken keeping in mind the safety, security, precautions, and mental health in the bio bubble of the players.
