The financial state of FC Barcelona doesn’t look good. Latest financial figures show the Spanish giants’ debt at £1.1billion (€1.2bn) with £648million (€730m) of that due in the short term, while £236million (€266m) has to be paid to banks by June 30.

Spanish publication El Mundo claims that the LaLiga giants are “on the verge of bankruptcy”. The report also highlights the fact that 74 percent of the club’s revenues go to players’ wages – a figure that exceeds the league’s 70 percent limit.

Furthermore, Spanish radio station Cadena COPE has stated that the Barcelona players – including legend Lionel Messi – were not paid their wages last month, with this payment covering the second half of 2020.

The Barcelona squad usually receives their wages in two payments each year, one in June covering the first half of the year, and one in December covering the second half. The shortfall of the December payment, which covers July through December, is expected to be made up in February.

Barcelona will also be worried by the huge sums still owed to other clubs, with some of those players still being paid for by the Catalans not even on the Camp Nou books anymore. According to El Mundo, Barcelona owes a total of £112million (€126m) to other clubs. They still owe £26m (€29m) to Liverpool for the signing of Philippe Coutinho back in 2018. Meanwhile, Ajax are due £14m (€16m) for Frenkie de Jong while Bordeaux are owed

Each club requires its respective payments by June 30. Barcelona also owes money to Gremio and Bayern Munich for the deals involving Arthur and Arturo Vidal respectively. Neither player is at the club anymore.

The coronavirus crisis has hurt almost all the teams in Europe, but Barcelona has been affected the most. Sports pundits are painting a worrying picture for the LaLiga giants, and it remains to be seen how the club will deal with this financial crisis.
