The woman who was infamously accused by Nick Kyrgios of “being drunk out of her mind” during the Wimbledon men’s final has decided to take legal action against the player. 

Anna Palus, the Polish lawyer, was temporarily evicted from the Centre Court after Kyrgios’ complaints. She has accused the Australian tennis star of making “reckless and entirely baseless allegation” that caused her and her family “substantial damage and distress”.

“I am not litigious, but after much consideration, I have concluded that I have no alternative but to instruct my solicitors Brett Wilson LLP to bring defamation proceedings against Mr Kyrgios in order to clear my name,” the statement read.

Palus also confirmed that the damages recovered from this defamation suit will go to charity. She also stated that she only had two drinks and was rather cheering for Kyrgios the whole time. 

Kyrgios’ outbursts and on-court tantrums overshadowed his performance in the tournament. He reached the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career, and put up a tough fight before going down to Novak Djokovic. During the game, he was constantly interacting with the spectators, and occasionally confronted the chair umpire.

Kyrgios complained about the lady for causing distraction and talking to him in between points, and wanted the umpire to take action. “She’s distracting me when I’m serving in Wimbledon final. There’s no other bigger occasion. You didn’t believe me and then she’s did it again, it nearly cost me the game. Why’s she still here? She’s drunk out of her mind,” he said. 

Back home, Kyrgios is facing a criminal charge for assaulting his ex-girlfriend. He will have to appear in court in October, and if charges are proven, he may face imprisonment of two years.

After finishing as the runner-up in Wimbledon, Kyrgios completed a double at Citi Open in Washington – where he men’s doubles title with Jack Sock just a couple of hours after beating Yoshihito Nishioka in the men’s singles final. He will be next seen in the upcoming US Open later this month.
