Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and American musician Pharrell William’s joint sculpture will be auctioned off next week at Christie’s in Hong Kong sale dubbed ‘HI-LITE’ on November 23.
Dubbed The Simple Things, the sculpture is estimated to fetch up to $3.8 million USD. The artwork, which features Murakami’s signature character Mr DOB, is constructed with steel, fibreglass, acrylic, and has an LED light system. The design of the sculpture showcases Mr DOB’s head with his mouth open, which holds seven bejewelled items picked by Pharrell Williams to represent objects that he uses on a daily basis. The items are a Pepsi can, a packet of Doritos, a bottle of Heinz Ketchup, a cupcake, a Trojan Magnum condom, a bottle of Johnson’s baby lotion and a Billionaire Boys Club sneaker. The bejewelled objects are inlaid with 26,000 gems by Manhattan-based jewellery and wristwatch retailer, Jacob & Co.

The sculpture aims for viewers to “see everyday objects in a different light,” according to Asia Chiao, Associate Specialist of Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art at Christie’s Hong Kong. She added, “A bejewelled can of Pepsi draws our attention in a way that a regular soda can would not, challenging us to reconsider the value of everyday joys and pleasures.”
