GTA 6: Release Date, Compatibility, Story, Map And More
GTA 6: Top 5 Things We Know So Far

We answer the what, when and who of the highly-anticipated Rockstar sequel

What do Game of Thrones and Grand Theft Auto have in common? We may not see either of the sequels coming out in our lifetime. In all seriousness though, the upcoming GTA 6 has now reached the cult-like status of Half-Life 3, with speculations running wild and some fans even questioning the existence of it. To put those worries to rest (sort of), we’ve compiled everything we know about the upcoming game so far. But first things first…

When Was It Confirmed?

While whispers of a Vice City-based sequel have been doing the rounds on the internet for almost a decade now, Rockstar only officially confirmed the game back in February of last year, by sneaking in a small note at the bottom of a GTA 5 community update, stating “active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway”.

When is it coming out?

To answer it briefly, we don’t know. There’s been no confirmation on the release date for GTA 6 as of yet. However, as per many insider sources, Rockstar is currently targeting a release date somewhere close to the holiday season of 2024. Although, some reports do suggest that it might get extended to early 2025 or 2026 as well.

What will it be compatible with?

While there is no official confirmation yet, the leaks suggest that the upcoming sequel will be exclusive to new–gen hardware. This suggests players with a PS4 or Xbox One may need to upgrade soon. To incentivise the decision, there have also been rumours suggesting that Rockstar might introduce cross-play, which will allow players to team up or play against each other regardless of their hardware choice.

What do we know about the map?

We do know that GTA 6 will primarily take the players back to Vice City, but some leakers have suggested that the developers may include the entire state of Florida to explore. If true, the map could be bigger than the size of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. A known industry analyst Michael Pachter has even gone ahead and stated that “My understanding is that it is a mashup of Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City, and Europe. London for sure.”

What about the story and the plot?

Rockstar has been very secretive about revealing any information about the upcoming game. Although, industry rumours suggest that it’ll feature two protagonists – a male and a female in the lead, with a story that is similar to that of Bonnie and Clyde. This suggests that the players might have access to the same character-switching mechanic introduced in GTA 5.
