OPPO’s Reno line has come to define it’s premium product offerings. Almost a year ago, the Reno 10X Zoom impressed us with its design language. It was the most stylish OPPO device we had checked out. The Reno 3 Pro picks up the threads. This isn’t just a good looking device but it feels really good in your hands. At a time when many premium flagships feel clunky and inch closer to the 200 gm heft mark, this one’s a welcome exception. OPPO has chosen its colour palette wisely too. We checked out the Sky White Colour option, our favourite among the three colours this device is available in.
The Reno 3 Pro’s slinky design extends to the display. A tiny cut-out that’s easy to ignore conceals a dual selfie cam. OPPO has positioned this as the world’s first 44MP dual punch-hole camera. It keeps the 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display (1080 x 2400 pixels) almost clutter free. OPPO stretches the screen: body ratio beyond 91%, add a 20:9 aspect ratio and this is a terrific screen for Content consumption and all your binge watching sessions. The device is augmented by Dolby Atmos and Hi-res audio but we wish OPPO had opted for a stereo speaker set up.
OPPO has kitted the Reno 3 Pro with a Mediatek Helio P95 Processor that teams up with 8GB of RAM. There’s a choice of two internal storage options – 128GB (that we tested) and 256GB. Performance is quite solid; the device notched up an impressive 224054 score in our AnTuTu benchmark test. If heavy duty gaming and performance is your thing, then you’re probably better off with the OnePlus 7T at a similar price point. The 4025 mAh battery lasted us a day without a fuss and should work for most average users.
OPPO has always loved its selfie cam. The dual selfie cam is one of the best in this price segment. The Ultra Night Mode is a great option for those selfies with the wolfpack at a dimly lit nightclub. The rear cam almost keeps up with a quad cam set-up that includes a 64MP primary lens. The cam allows you to shoot up to 5X (optical zoom) and 20X (digital mode). Results are a mixed bag with the zoom photography but the device manages a decent all-round performance across lighting and shooting scenarios. We like the ultra-steady video mode.
OPPO has worked hard to upgrade its Custom UI – ColorOS 7. While the aesthetics have improved from previous iterations, it still remains a tad too busy for our liking and the bloatware doesn’t help its cause. But that’s one of the only minor cribs in a device that scores big on its design language and form factor and an immersive display. But is that enough for OPPO to take on formidable rivals in the Rs 30,000 – Rs 35,000 price band? We’ll find out soon enough.
The OPPO Reno 3 Pro costs Rs 29,990 for the 8GB/128GB version and Rs 32,990 for the 8GB/256 GB variant. It comes in a choice of Auroral Blue, Midnight Black and Sky White colour options.
