Social media site Snapchat is close to launching an all new gaming platform as early as next month. This was reported today by the  popular video news website Cheddar.

Codenamed “Project Cognac”, the gaming platform is set to be unveiled at the company’s Snap Partner Summit in Los Angeles on April 4th.

This isn’t the first time the app has dabbled in games. The company launched “Snappables,” a set of AR lens games last year, but the new platform is said to be a larger foray into the gaming world, allowing outside developers to create games that would be be able to operate within the Snapchat app.

CNET had reported Snapchat buying out Australian gaming studio Prettygreat back in January 2019, which only further strengthens the claims of Project Cognac’s existence. Additionally, The Information reported in June 2018 that Snap was working on a gaming platform, which again, strengthens Cheddar’s report.

Tencent — the Chinese tech conglomerate that owns Riot Games and League of Legends as well as popular messaging app WeChat — also bought a 12 percent stake in Snap last year.

Snapchat is foraying into the gaming sector to increase user engagement. Following the footsteps of Facebook, which included games inside the app years ago, adding games to Snapchat could offer a new source of revenue for the app from advertisers looking to place ads in games as well as in-game purchases.
