Manish Malhotra’s Rules of Style

With the Lakme Fashion Week just around the corner, here are a few snippets by Manish Malhotra on how to make a style statement.

Ace designer Manish Malhotra will present his Spring/Summer Haute Couture Collection known as Elements at the Lakme Fashion Week. Inspired by nature and the four elements such as Earth, Water, Wind and Fire, his collection puts in a lot of emphasis on easy styles and cuts. With the Lakme Fashion Week just around the corner, here are a few snippets by Manish Malhotra on how to make a style statement.

  • I believe that fashion is ever evolving. It’s a way to express yourself, while styling is all about your individuality. My style is largely about comfort, but it also reflects a certain enjoyment I derive from fashion.
  •

  • Some of the designers I love are Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, and brands like Louis Vuitton and Missoni.
  •

  • Every man should figure out what his wardrobe staples are. For me, it includes staples like a crisp white shirt, a black bandi jacket (a version of a waist-length Nehru jacket), a classic bandhgala suit in deep blue and an elegant pair of shoes.
  •

  • I believe in using one individual element to create a statement. It could be an interesting scarf draped over a simple, well-tailored shirt, for instance.
  •

  • A classic well-tailored bandhgala jacket is at par with formal suits and tuxedos. You can never go wrong with this one.
  •

  • Wearing unconventional colour combinations can lend an edgy element to a man’s wardrobe.
  •

  • For an occasion that demands that you wear Indian clothes, try teaming colourful churidaars with plain kurtas.
  •

  • On an evening out, wearing a casual denim shirt with a good pair of denims is interesting.
  •

  • An interesting accessory always enhances the character of your outfit, while a good fragrance is like a powerful whisper. If there’s one grooming staple I can never do without, it is the Concentrée perfume.
  •

  • A look is never complete without a classy pair of shoes. Ditch the boring browns for a pair in burgundy.
  •

  • When I look at the past, I believe that the biggest faux pas in the history of fashion were bell-bottoms. I still haven’t understood that concept.
