Blue Is The Warmest Colour: Best Watches Of 2018 (Part 1)

Blue watches are a thing this year. In the second part of our series, we look at more brands that are banking on this hue

CHOPARD L.U.C ALL-IN-ONE

This striking new version of the two-dial 2010 watch comes with 14 indications on its two faces. The grey blue solid goldplated front dial has a guilloché motif radiating out from the large date at 12 o’clock. In addition to hours, minutes and date, the front face features a tourbillon at 6 o’clock, perpetual calendar with 24- hour indication, day of the week indication at 9 o’clock, and display of the month and leap year at 3 o’clock. The dial displays the equation of time, power reserve, 24-hour day/night indication, and sunrise and sunset times set to Geneva and astronomical orbital moon phase. The mechanical hand-wound movement has a power reserve of 170 hours. Two limited editions of 10 pieces each.

HARRY WINSTON PROJECT Z12

The 12th watch in Harry Winston’s long running, iconic series stands out for its unique design, featuring a concentric but subtly asymmetric dial with two red tipped retrograde jumping hands. Placed under an openwork blue bridge, the hands create an illusion of tracing a perfect 360° circular trajectory while they are actually moving only within their own demarcated 140° fields, before jumping back to their original positions at the end of each rotation. This retrograde choreography occurs 26 times a day. It comes in a 42.2 mm Zalium case with a brand new automatic-winding caliber. Power reserve 68 hours. Limited edition of 300 pieces

A.LANGE & SÖHNE SAXONIA THIN

This timepiece is Lange’s thinnest ever watch. Based on the ‘less is more’ principle, the elegant white-gold case is only 6.2 mm thick, with a diameter of 39 mm. The copper-blue dial – made from solid silver, coated with a thin layer of shimmering goldstone – is crafted using a manufacturing process that was originally developed in Venice in the 17th century. Despite its slender 2.9 mm thickness, the manually wound movement yields a power reserve of 72 hours.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN OVERSEAS DUAL TIME

This new addition to the Overseas collection, with a translucent blue dial in a 41 mm stainless steel case, allows for simultaneous reading of the two time zones by means of coaxial hands. The hour hand indicates the traveller’s current location, while the hand tipped with a triangular arrow shows the original local time zone. The day/ night (AM/PM) indication at 9 o’clock is synchronised with home time, while the date, at 6 o’clock, is synchronised with local time. Power reserve of 60 hours.

ZENITH PILOT TYPE 20 EXTRA SPECIAL CHRONOGRAPH

The imposing 45 mm bronze case with easily adjustable wide fluted crown, and the oversized luminescent numerals are a tribute to an era when pilots depended on wrist watches from makers to keep time in air. The caseback is engraved with a logo of the plane flown by pioneer Louis Blériot across the English Channel in 1909 with a Zenith on his wrist. The dial features a central chronograph hand and a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock. The automatic El Primero 4069 movement has a power reserve of 50 hours.

GREUBEL FORSEY QUADRUPLE TOURBILLON BLUE

One of the most innovative watch makers in the world, Greubel Forsey made a grand statement in 2012 by launching the original Quadruple Tourbillon, a stunning spectacle of four tourbillons performing a perfectly choreographed horological ballet on its asymmetrical dial. The 2018 version comes with a striking hand-finished dial which, when reflecting direct light, attains an unprecedented depth of blue. The 43.5 mm case, in platinum or red gold, is 16.11 mm thick, since it packs 534 parts. Power reserve of 50 hours. Limited to 8 pieces in platinum and 8 in red gold.

BREITLING NAVITIMER 1 AUTOMATIC 38

This 38 mm version of the famous timepiece is targeted at men who prefer smaller watches, and women who always wanted to wear a Navitimer. The steel case features a beaded and ratcheted bidirectional bezel with an easy-tomaster aviation slide rule. Power reserve of 40 hours.

GRAHAM CHRONOFIGHTER SUPERLIGHT CARBON

Despite being a monster of a watch at 47 mm, this one weighs less than 100 g thanks to its black carbon composite case. The material is used heavily in aerospace and automotive industries, something to which the company’s roots can be traced back. Beating under all that carbon is Graham’s calibre G1747 – a 25-jewel automatic chronograph movement with a reversed 30-minute counter, visible through the crystal caseback. Power reserve of 48 hours

LONGINES CONQUEST V.H.P

34 years after a quartz calibre was first fitted in a Conquest V.H.P (setting a precision record for that time), this new version comes fitted with a chronograph calibre in various chromatic variations. The watch stands out for the high degree of precision for an analogue watch (±5 s/yr) and its ability to reset its hands after an impact or exposure to a magnetic field, using the GPD (Gear Position Detection) system. It comes in two sizes (42 mm and 44 mm), and four dial options, including blue. The 30-minute counter is at 3 o’clock, the 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock and 60-second counter in the centre. The intelligent crown drives two indicators that preventively signal the end of battery life

IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN PORTUGIESER YACHT CLUB CHRONOGRAPH

Part of the Summer Editions collection, this sporty chronograph comes in a waterresistant 43.5 mm stainless steel case, a blue dial, white subdials, rhodium-plated hands and appliqués, a red stopwatch hand, and a resilient blue rubber strap – customizable with limited edition blue or light grey straps. The 89361 manufacture calibre with flyback function indicates the measured hours and minutes together on a subdial at 12 o’clock, while the quartersecond scale that surrounds the dial allows for precise measurement of shorter time periods. Power reserve of 68 hours.

ROGER DUBUIS EXCALIBUR AVENTADOR S BLUE

This watch is a part of colourful new iterations of the brand’s Excalibur line launched last year in partnership with tyremaker Pirelli and sportscar legend Lamborghini Squadra Corse. The skeletonised 45 mm case is made from the same C-SMC carbon used on Lamborghini cars. The fluted titanium black DLC skeletonised bezel is complemented by a crown over-moulded with blue rubber and red stitching on the strap. The handwound movement has a power reserve of 40 hours. Limited edition of 88 pieces.

GIRARDPERREGAUX LAUREATO CHRONOGRAPH

The addition of two new sizes (42 mm and 38 mm) to its chronograph line is the result of a major uptick in GP’s focus on the Laureato collection in recent times. The octagonal bezel is housed on a steel (or pink gold) case, with the dial being offered in three different colours, including this deep blue piece. The self-winding chronograph movement is made of 435 components, driving two counters, a small seconds sub-dial as well as a date display. Power reserve of 46 hours.

RADO TRUE THINLINE NATURE

The watchmaker invokes the colours of nature with its ceramic hues in this collection that includes a mother-of-pearl blue dial and a matching blue ceramic titanium bracelet. Under the philosophy of ‘organic detailing’, the stainless steel crown complements the pointers and the hands. The compact ETA 282.002 quartz movement ensures a minimalist shape and 5 mm profile.

LUMINOX NAVY SEAL CHRONOGRAPH 3580 SERIES

The watchmaker has extended its Navy Seal collection with the 3580 series that comes with six models, and new features including the chronograph function. The trademarked Carbonox 45 mm casing adds to the toughness and houses a quartz movement.

ORIS AQUIS BIG DAY DATE

This elegant diver’s watch comes with a small gap between the case and the bezel that has been carefully engineered for easy gripping and adjustment of the unidirectional rotating bezel. The 45.5 mm stainless steel case is water resistant to 500 m. The deep blue dial is accompanied by a scratch-resistant black ceramic bezel insert and a Swiss-made automatic movement with oversized day and date indications.

RAYMOND WEIL MAESTRO BLUES

As the followers of the Swiss maison would tell you, the blues in the name of this two-watch collection refers more to music than the colour. This musical dedication is a part of the Maestro series that has previously sought inspiration from various music icons. The 40 mm polished steel case on one of the watches is home to the galvanic dark blue dial. It gets a cutout at 12 o’clock to display the movement’s oscillating balance wheel. The mechanical, self-winding movement is also visible through the caseback. Power reserve of 38 hours.

ALPINA ALPINERX OUTDOORS SMARTWATCH

Alpina opted to launch this watch on the popular crowdfunding portal, Kickstarter. The objective was to take feedback from backers for moulding and altering the design before its final release. Tagged as a ‘horological smartwatch’, it comes with an analogue/ digital display, five sensors, a smartphone app, and 3,200 colour combinations to boot. The 45 mm case is made of blue glass-fibre and stainless steel. Other features include a worldtimer, an altimeter, a chronometer, a compass, a UV index, temperature, and all other smartwatch functions. Battery life of over two years.

VICTORINOX I.N.O.X. PROFESSIONAL DIVER TITANIUM

True to its title, the Victorinox diver’s watch recently received a titanium upgrade. The blue Super-LumiNova material, used for hands, and hour indicators, provides ample luminescence for underwater conditions while the 45 mm sandblasted titanium case guarantees a 200 m water resistance. Other features include a unidirectional rotating bezel with luminescent markers and a date calendar at 4.30. Ronda 715 Swiss-made quartz movement.
