A clean dial with no hour markers, just two hands with a prominent ‘dot’, positioned at 12 o’ clock. This indestructible identity has been established by Movado over the years, where the brand has now become synonymous with minimalist designs in the watchmaking industry.

However, it wasn’t always this way. As most Swiss watch manufacturers, Movado too started out producing pocket watches in 1881, when Achilles Ditesheim, a 19-year-old entrepreneur, hired six watchmakers and established a tiny workshop at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. And it was only in 1905 that the company actually came to be known as ‘Movado’ — meaning ;always in motion’ in the auxiliary, international language of Esperanto.

Ever since, Movado has been one of the most dynamic brands, constantly innovating and adapting to the changing horological landscape; its single-dot Museum Watch created in 1947 perhaps being the most distinguished models in its line-up. The brand boasts over 100 patents and 200 technological breakthroughs, and the story continues till date.

Here, we look at six new models from the Movado Bold and Museum Classic lines that best define the brand’s watchmaking ethos.

Museum Classic

This line builds up on the 1947 Museum Watch created by designer Nathan George Horwitt. It stands out for its classic design with a clutter-free dial — essential for retaining attention on the watch functions rather than getting distracted by excessive elements.

Featured above is a 33mm rose gold PVD-finished model with a stainless steel case, presented on a black leather strap. The watch stands out for its black dial, the signature concave dot at 12 o’ clock, and hour and minute hands in rose gold PVD. Water-resistant to 30m, it is powered by a quartz movement and the slim profile is ideal for people who want an elegant timekeeper on their wrists.

There is also a 40mm stainless steel version with a round, black dial featuring 11 diamond markers and silver-toned dot and hands. This slight robust model is for for those fond of sporty designs and is also driver by a quartz movement. It is mounted on a stainless steel link bracelet with deployant clasp, is water-resistant to 30m, and can be worn on both formal and casual outings.

The Movado Museum Classic Automatic comes in a 40mm, stainless steel rose gold PVD-finished case with an elegant black dial. Just like the other watches in this line, the minimalistic dial features only a dot at the 12 o’clock position along with two hands sweeping across the face, and a date window at six o’clock. The highlight, however, is the automatic movement that keeps this watch ticking for at least 38 hours. After that, one has to simply wind the crown in a clockwise direction to get the watch running again. Presented on a black leather strap, the timepiece also offers water-resistance of up to 30m.

Movado Bold

This collection comprises timepieces that challenge the traditional codes of watchmaking design, thereby imparting a more contemporary appeal to their watches.

Pictured above, the resplendent Bold Evolution watch comes in a 34mm, rose gold, ion-plated, stainless steel case, and is presented on a matching bracelet. The clean dial features only hands in the same colour scheme with the signature dot at 12 o’clock, embellished by a round crystal. This dainty timekeeper is brought to life by a quartz movement and is water-resistant to 30m.

For those who favour robust timepieces, the Movado Bold Fusion is an ideal choice that is offered in two sporty versions — dark blue and rose gold — both ion-plated on 44.5mm stainless steel cases. The dials of both models, including the signature dot, are in the same hues, matching the cases with contrasting black sub-dials at three, six, and nine o’clock positions.

Both timepieces are driven by a Swiss quartz chronograph movement that offers supreme precision, protected by a solid case back offering a water resistance of up to 50m. The blue version is presented on a matching bracelet while the rose gold model is mounted on a black silicone strap.
