Breguet updates its nautical-inspired Marine collection with three new models in new colour combinations.

There was a time when maritime navigation needed the help of watches as scientific instruments. These works of mechanical genius were an integral part of maritime exploration and nautical discoveries. Abraham-Louis Breguet, one of the most prolific watchmakers of all time, was one such individual whose interest in the field led to the creation of high-precision marine chronometers. These instruments helped sailors to calculate the position of ships at sea. This background in nautical navigation led to Breguet developing its Marine collection back in 1990. Since then, the brand has unveiled many nautical-inspired timepieces.

For 2021, Breguet announced the expansion of its iconic Marine collection in new variations like rose gold with slate-gray dial, and titanium with a blue dial. These new timepieces are variations of the Marine 5517, 5527, and 5547 models, which feature a three-hand display and a date indication, a flyback chronograph with a large central hand for time indication, and an alarm function with a second timezone, respectively. The three models also house classic Breguet features like an hours’ chapter with Roman numerals and luminescent dots, the famous moon-tipped Breguet hands in luminescent faceted gold, and a central hand with subtle marine detail.

Let’s get to know each one more closely:

BREGUET MARINE 5517

Offering a pristine yet compact look, the Marine 5517 is one of the most straightforward watches from the lot. It provides a three-hand time and date function visible via the slate-gray or sunburst blue dials in gold. It further houses faceted Breguet moon-tipped hands in gold, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a central second hand inspired by maritime codes.

With a 40mm diameter and a thin height of 11.50 mm, the case of the Marine 5517 is comfortable on the wrist. It features a fluted caseband with a protected crown and a sapphire caseback. The watch is available in two case materials — titanium or rose gold — with water resistance to 100 metres.

Beating at the heart of the Marine 5517 is Breguet’s in-house automatic calibre 777A movement that clocks in a power reserve of 55 hours. The watch is available in rubber, leather strap and 18K rose gold bracelet for the slate-gray dial and titanium bracelet for the blue dial option.

BREGUET MARINE ALARME MUSICALE 5547

The final timepiece in the trio of new Marine models is the Alarme Musicale 5547. As the name suggests, this particular timepiece features an alarm and a GMT complication combination. Like the Marine 5517, this version also comes in a 40mm case but is slightly thicker (13.05 mm) due to the complex movement.

Available in titanium and 18K red gold case material, the two pushers on the side of the case operate the timekeeping and alarm functionality. The dial hosts two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock, which showcases the alarm and second time zone functionality. Inside the watch beats the in-house automatic caliber 519F/1 movement that clocks in a power reserve of 45 hours.

BREGUET MARINE CHRONOGRAPHE 5527

The Marine Chronographe 5527 is the sportiest sibling from the lot. A chronograph version of the base Marine line, the timepiece comes in a bigger case size of 42.3mm X 13.85 mm. The watch is lighter on the wrist despite its bigger case size, courtesy of the titanium case. Its remarkable properties of being resistant to salty air and corrosion make it ideal for maritime-theme timepieces.

Retaining all the design elements of the classic Marine timepiece, the watch comes in two variations; a sunburst blue dial in gold or slate-gray dial in gold. The dial is home to a minute counter at 3 o’clock, hours at 6 o’clock, and small seconds at 9 o’clock. The date window sits comfortably between 4 and 5 o’clock.

Powering the Marine Chronographe 5527 is Breguet’s Caliber 582QA, capable of a 48-hour power reserve, and beats at a frequency of 4Hz, or 28,800 vph. The blue dial version is available in rubber, leather and titanium bracelet while the slate-gray dial comes in an 18K rose gold bracelet.
