Foraying into the quick-growing 200-250cc motorcycle segment in India, Yamaha launched its next big street fighter bike in the form of the FZ25 at a sticker price of Rs 1.19 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) on Tuesday.

Of course, Bollywood’s biking mascot, John Abraham was present on the occasion, in the Japanese bikemaker’s bid to challenge the likes of the upcoming Bajaj Pulsar NS200, the KTM 200 Duke, the Honda CBR250R and the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V in this market space.

Styling

The Yamaha FZ25 continues on the legacy of the FZ range of motorcycles, first launched in India in 2008, with sharp lines and a sculpted overall demeanour. The biggest talking point here is the all LED headlamp, which is a first for the manufacturer. The tail lamps also get an LED avatar on the rear and are complemented well by a stubby exhaust muffler design.

Specs

As the name suggest, the bike comes powered by the BSIV compliant oil-cooled, 249cc, fuel injected, single-cylinder motor with Blue Core technology that makes 20.9PS and 20Nm. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a 5-speed gearbox as the Jap claims an impressive fuel efficiency of 43 kmpl with this powertrain.

The bike comes with telescopic front forks on the front and a monoshock suspension setup at the rear while stopping duties are handled by disc brakes on both ends. The bike rides on a 17-inch 100/80 section front tyre and a 140/70 section of the same radius on the behind.

Features

The bike stands tall with a 160mm ground clearance and the fuel tank capacity is sufficient at 14 litres. There is an LCD instrument console and sporty split seats to go along with the lightweight characteristics of the bike, thanks to a wet weight of only 148kg.

Besides, the bike will be available in three colour options – Knight Black, Ballistic Blue, Warrior White. What the Yamaha FZ25 dearly misses is an ABS that has suffered as a result of the cost-cutting measures.

Pricing and competition

The bike is Yamaha’s first venture into this big bike space that has experienced a near-50 percent jump in sales from 2015 to 2016. As mentioned earlier, it will share this space with the likes of the Pulsars and KTMs that already have established themselves in this segment.

What could work in the favour of the Yamaha FZ25 though, could be its aggressive pricing that undercuts almost all other rivals by at least Rs 20,000.
