Met Gala 2020 has been officially cancelled. The annual fashion gala, which was slated for May 4 had been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Now, the Met announced on Tuesday that this year’s event has been called off entirely.

The annual fashion event happens every first Monday of May and brings in the biggest entertainment guests. It also one of the heavily attended red carpet events of the year. Each year, the Met comes up with a theme, which is followed by the designers who dress up the selected celebrities.

This year’s theme of the gala was ‘About Time:  Fashion and Duration,’ a complement to the museum’s exhibit. The Met Museum is planning to reopen in mid-August or a few weeks later. The exhibit will be still open on October 29.

Met President Daniel H. Weiss said in the statement that “the Met has endured much in its 150 years and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future. This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. As we endure these challenging and uncertain times, we are encouraged by looking forward to the day when we can once again welcome all to enjoy the Met’s collection and exhibitions.”
