Michael Kors announced that he would not be showcasing his collection during the traditional Fashion Week schedule in September. Instead, the Spring/Summer 2021 Michael Kors Collection will be presented sometime between mid-October and mid-November 2020, which is yet to decided.

“I have for a long time thought that the fashion calendar needs to change,” says the designer. “It’s exciting for me to see the open dialogue within the fashion community about the calendar—from Giorgio Armani to Dries Van Noten to Gucci to YSL to major retailers around the globe—about ways in which we can slow down the process and improve the way we work. We’ve all had time to reflect and analyze things, and I think many agree that it’s time for a new approach for a new era.”

The American designer said he will now only produce two collections per year, one for spring/summer and one for autumn/winter and it will deliver these incrementally to stores, rather than selling entire collections all at once.

“Prior to the late 1990s, the New York Spring collections were shown from late October to the beginning of November, after the Paris collections,” adds Kors. “That calendar was in place for many decades and worked quite smoothly, and particularly in this age with the speed of social media, showing the collection closer to when it will be delivered makes logical sense to me.”

He is the latest designer to join a list of designers who are adopting new calendar, which makes even more easier to make it work. In April, Saint Laurent announced that it would be leaving the Paris Fashion Week schedule whereas, Gucci announced it would be going seasonless.
