As more people come out in support of actress Tanushree Dutta, it appears that the much required #MeToo movement has finally arrived in India. The actress has been speaking out about an alleged case of harassment that took place on the sets of the movie Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.

This is not the first time Bengali women have come through like a storm and shown everyone how it’s done. We catalogue four other bong bombshells who broke barriers and shattered glass ceilings.

Bipasha Basu

In 1999, the stunning actress had shot a ‘bold’ advertisement for New York Lotto. In the video, Basu reveals a lot of skin and hence, when it appeared on Youtube, people went crazy. According to The Telegraph, this is what she had to say: “I think the ad is nothing controversial and John told me I looked really hot in it.” You go, girl!

Recently, Basu and her husband, Karan Singh Grover were also trolled for appearing in a condom ad. “The idea is to create awareness on the subject; it’s the need of the hour. I am doing no wrong by endorsing condoms,” she said, according to MidDay. Not one to be affected by the haters, Basu continued to share shots from the shoot on her Instagram.

Sharmila Tagore

Sharmila Tagore in ‘An Evening In Paris’

An evening in Paris was the first movie in which an Indian actress donned a swimsuit. A Times of India report quotes director Shakti Samanta as saying that it was the actress’ idea and that she had suggested that they go with a bikini. However, keeping the censors in mind, Samanta decided to go for a blue single-piece swimsuit. During a Filmfare shoot, however, Tagore donned a bikini and shocked the still very conservative nation.

While Dam had a considerable body of work way before her Bollywood debut Hate Story, national media first took note of her before the release of the film which was termed shockingly bold by many. Her 2011 film Chatrak also created a massive controversy when an unsimulated sex scene between her and fellow actor Anubrata Basu leaked on the internet. Dam didn’t give a damn and has continued to deliver stellar performances.

Sushmita Sen

Sen was the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe competition and followed it up with several commercially successful films. When Sen first decided to adopt a baby girl in the year 2000, it triggered whispers from a section of the country’s conservative populace who couldn’t understand why a ‘successful and beautiful’ woman like Sen would choose to adopt instead of marrying and reproducing. Sen adopted a second girl in 2010 and is not only a role model for her daughters but has also set a brilliant example for the youth of the country.
