The first trailer for the coming-of-age drama Boy Erased dropped on Tuesday. The film deals with the issue of ‘gay conversion therapy’ and is based on the memoir of the same name by Garrard Conley. Lucas Hedges plays Jared, a Baptist pastor’s son who is outed to his parents. He is then forced by his parents (played by Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman) to attend a conversion therapy program.

“The way in which she and her husband feel about putting [Jared] into conversion therapy, I wanted that to come from a place of a mother thinking it’s the right thing to do,” Kidman told the Entertainment Weekly. “Nothing that she did was vindictive, which is probably why they have such a strong relationship now.”

Conversion therapy treats homosexuality as a mental illness and attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation through pseudoscientific methods. Not only do those methods fail spectacularly, they are also incredibly damaging to a person’s mental health.

Twitter was all praise for the hard-hitting trailer and the film has already started generating Oscar buzz. The film is expected to release on the 2nd of November.
