Indian socialite and businesswoman Natasha Poonawalla is a regular at the annual Met Gala event and she always manages to make heads turn on the red carpet. This year, Poonawalla outdid herself as she arrived in a Sabyasachi outfit. Her dramatic look made everyone take note of her sartorial prowess and it deserved every bit of appreciation.

Keeping the Met Gala 2022 theme, Gilded Glamour and White Tie, in mind, the businesswoman donned a golden, custom handcrafted printed tulle sari with details added to the long floor-sweeping trail of the saree. Embroidered with silk floss thread and embellished with “bevel beads, semi-precious stones, crystals, sequins and appliquéd printed velvet,” she paired the six yards with a matching embroidered strapless blouse with a sweetheart neckline.

The saree was paired with a hand-forged Schiaparelli metal bustier with raised wires. The dramatic look was complimented with custom jewellery from Sabyasachi, including earrings, stone-studded sunglasses, rings, bangles, haath bandh and headdress. Each piece was crafted using traditional techniques with precious and semi-precious stones for Sabysachi’s Fine Jewellery and limited edition collectables by Sabyasachi’s Curiosity Art and Antiquity Project.

Describing the look, Sabyasachi said, “For me the sari is a truly unique and versatile garment that owns its identity even as it transcends boundaries and geographies. Back when I was a young fashion student, I often wondered when I would see the sari at big global fashion events like the Met Gala.”

Pictures of Poonawalla’s golden look for the event went viral on the internet. People have been raving about the stunning saree. Twitter was impressed by the fact that she gave the Indian touch to her Met Gala 2022 look and represented the country in such a tasteful fashion.

The theme for 2022 Met Gala was Gilded Glamour and White Tie, in reference to the 2022 exhibition – In America: An Anthology of Fashion. The exhibition is the second entry of a two-piece exhibition following 2021’s In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. As for this year’s theme, Gilded Glamour means to represent the era of industrialization and wealth disparity seen in the late decades of the 19th century. The event was attended by the likes of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Regina King, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds as the co-chairs.
