The NAACP announced that Rihanna will be the recipient of the President’s Award, which will be given out during the 51st NAACP Image Awards. The singer also picked up the ‘Urban Luxe’ award at the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards last year at the Royal Albert Hall for her Fenty label.
According to Hypebeast, the President’s Award has been given out in order to recognize “special achievement and distinguished public service.” Apart from her excellent musical career, Rihanna has been acknowledged for her efforts in philanthropy, fashion, entrepreneurship and more. Last year, the pop singer made history as the first black woman to partner with LVMH and the first woman to ever start an original fashion house with the company.
“Rihanna has not only enjoyed a groundbreaking career as an artist and musician but has also distinguished herself as a stellar public servant,” stated Derrick Johnson, president, and CEO of the NAACP. “From her business achievements through Fenty to her tremendous record as an activist and philanthropist, Rihanna epitomizes the type of character, grace, and devotion to justice that we seek to highlight in our President’s Award.”
Rihanna will join other acclaimed recipients including Jay-Z, Jesse Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Muhammad Ali, Soledad O’Brien, Colin Powell, and Condoleezza Rice, among others.
