MW picks the trends that are set to rule this season
Military Green
Green is a colour that seems to be creeping into men’s wardrobe all round, with military green making a dominant play. Dior Homme’s military green jacket suit with utility pockets caught our eye, and so did a safari suit by Richard James.
Bomber Jacket
Bombers never went out of fashion. But in its reinvented avatar designers have been playing around with the cuts and colours, presenting them in a myriad of hues including blues, browns, greens, etc. There was much play around the collars as you can see in the photographs.
Overcoats
The overcoat as always was a key element of the season. Styles that stood out for us include the camel coloured one from Eremegildo Zegna, a quilted version by Canali and the floral prints on the inside lining of Burberry’s signature trench.
Double-Breasted
The double-breasted suit is back with a bang after a short hiatus. Styles varied from two buttons to four and the traditional six. But it was the little embellishments around the lapel and the pockets that made the jackets stand out.
Velvet
Velvet never went out of fashion, comfortable in its own runway niche. But this year they seem to have taken centre stage, particularly among Italian brands, and Tom Ford. Stylishly cut and in elegant colours, these suits look set to go mainstream.
Striped
The striped suit was a prominent presence on all the runways, many in the double-breasted style from the 20’s jazz age. But the silhouettes were slimmer. Noteworthy ones include the six-button double-breasted by Ferragamo, and the three button single breasted by Hermès.
Grey
Greys and men’s fashion always go hand in hand. This year they came in a variety of hues and finishes. Check out the grey tux by Richard James and a very conservatively cut suit by Vivienne Westwood.
Black
Black was another conventional men’s colour that was very creatively reworked by many designers with prints and other elements. The ones that stood out for us include Tom Ford, John Varvatos and Canali.
Prints
Men are taking to prints like never before, at least that is what the designers would have us believe. Prints came in all sizes and colours. For those still squeamish about prints, Canali has an understated version. But for those who want their suit to stand out, there will always be Versace.
Tux and its Allies
The tux came in myriad versions. The ones that caught our attention include Roberto Cavalli’s gold on black, and Tom Ford’s purple on black.
Colour
As has been seen in all the previous photographs as well, designers are infusing men’s wear with colour as never before. Yellow, red, orange, purple, green, you name it and there was a suit in that colour.
Funky & Outré
Expectedly there was lots this season that was done to shock and rattle. It was not just in terms of colour but also cuts and prints. Vivienne Westwood and Yohji Yamamoto were the two that we liked the most.
Jumper & Cardigan
For a season filled with over-the-top colours, prints and cuts, cardigans and jumpers that were on display by major designers were surprisingly muted in their tone, style and colour.
