These daily hair grooming habits seem harmless; the effects don’t show almost immediately but they take over gradually. Slowly, the number of strands fallen in the basin increases and more hair show up on your pillow cases in next morning. And the reason? It could your simple, everyday practices that are causing the increase in hair fall. If you’re guilty of following any of these, it’s a sign to stop today to save your crowning glory.
1. Wetting hair daily just to style it
Water weakens the hair shaft by causing swelling and cuticle lift. If you’re constantly wetting and brushing/styling damp hair, the cuticle stays stressed, leading to breakage and thinning over time.
2. Sleeping on cotton pillowcases
Cotton absorbs natural oils and creates friction, which roughs up the hair cuticle. Over time, this can cause increased breakage compared to silk or satin pillowcases.
3. Sleeping with wet hair
It might seem harmless but can cause fungal infection. Friction between damp, swollen strands and pillow weakens hair shafts, leading to shedding.
4. Using any product off the shelf to wash your hair
It’s the easiest thing to do but such frequent changes can aggravate hair fall. Stick to one product for at least a couple of months.
5. Reapplying styling products on day-old styled hair
Wash the product from hair before you reapply it the next day to prevent product build-up, clogged follicles and weaker strands.
6. Overusing dry shampoo
Dry shampoo can clog follicles, alter scalp microbiome balance, and weaken roots if it becomes a substitute for proper washing.
7. Using super-hot water to rinse
Hot showers strip the scalp’s protective oils and irritate follicles. Chronic dryness and inflammation from hot water can accelerate shedding.
8. Brushing in the shower
Hair is three times more fragile when wet. Detangling aggressively in the shower can snap strands close to the scalp causing breakage and weakening of follicles.
