Top Dermatologists Reveal What Really Works for Hair Loss

This is what the doctors want you to read before believing anything you read on the internet about fighting hair loss and excessive hair fall

You run your fingers through your hair one morning, and — wait, was that more than usual? Hair loss doesn’t always announce itself with a dramatic cue. For many men, it sneaks in quietly, turning once-thick locks into a daily guessing game in the mirror. Whether it’s a receding hairline, thinning at the crown, or a growing patch of denial, the struggle is real — and more common than you think.

However, that's not all; multiple hair care routines, practices, and products floating on the internet make it tougher to decide what actually works. So we sat down with leading dermatologists to talk facts, and what actually works when it comes to keeping your hair from bidding an early farewell.

Internet Says: Regular champi and head massage with strong strokes help in combatting excessive hair fall?

Doctor Says: "Acknowledging the point, I agree that while oiling can stimulate hair growth and reduce hair fall through hydration, it also attracts oil and dust. The removal process often requires double cleansing, potentially disrupting the scalp's pH balance and causing damage. Therefore, a basic pre-wash oil treatment with light strokes is a gentler and more balanced hair care approach, offering nourishment without excessive buildup or harsh cleansing."

Internet Says: Using Rosemary Oil is effective for those struggling with hair loss or excessive hair fall

Doctor Says: "Rosemary oil can be effective in managing certain types of hair fall, but it’s important to understand how and when it works. Studies have shown that rosemary oil may help stimulate blood circulation to the scalp, which in turn can support healthier hair follicles. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties also help reduce scalp irritation, which is a common trigger for hair shedding.

That said, it’s not a miracle fix or a one-size-fits-all solution. The results are usually very gradual and most effective in mild cases of thinning or early-stage hair loss. It must be used correctly—diluted with a carrier oil and massaged into the scalp regularly."

Internet Says: Cold pressed or virgin hair oils more effective for those struggling with hair loss or excessive hair fall

Doctor says: "Cold-pressed and virgin hair oils stand out for their nutrient retention—vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids—thanks to their heat- and chemical-free extraction. This makes them a potentially better choice for scalp health than refined oils, as they can support a healthy scalp environment and ease inflammation, which may indirectly help with hair fall.

However while oils like virgin coconut, argan, and castor can nourish the scalp and enhance hair texture, they don't target the root causes of male hair loss, specifically androgenetic alopecia. For that, established treatments like minoxidil or finasteride are recommended."

Internet says: Massaging Aloe Vera gel on scalp can help in hair growth and stop excessive hair fall

Doctor says: " Though aloe vera gel is  good for hydration and, in some cases, it can provide little smoothening and shine for the skin and hair as well, but there is no scientific evidence that it can help with the hair growth. In some patients, it can also can trigger allergies. We have a better organic extracts like redensil and procapil or caffeine which can actually help with the hair growth.
