“We are ramping up our efforts to improve hospital infrastructure and testing, our aim always has been to nip this illness in the bud and we will,” said Lav Aggarwal, the Health Secretary while Salila Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs said: “We’re monitoring the lockdown 24/7, any problems are being addressed via our control rooms, we are ensuring smooth functioning.”

This was regarding the 21-day lockdown initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s fight against the novel coronavirus. So far, the number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 1071 with 29 fatalities. 100 patients have recovered.

Even as authorities say that there’s no evidence of community transmission of the coronavirus, health and medical professionals fear whether India with its fragile health-care system and battered economy can handle the crisis like that has devastated nations like Italy and China.

In a report, Bloomberg spoke to more than a dozen health professionals working on the front lines and while nobody said that there was a spike in COVID-19 cases yet, they agreed that its a matter of time and that India wasn’t ready. In fact, a University of Michigan-run study predicts that India could have around 915,000 coronavirus infections by mid-May which would be more than the cases for the whole world right now.
