It finally happened! Last year, we were praying to all the gods that may Leonardo DiCaprio be blessed with his first Oscar. Our prayers were clearly answered so we tried the same thing today and would you look at that, it worked this time too. But we can’t take all the credit.
Joaquin Phoenix ended his losing streak at the Academy Awards and won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Arthur Fleck in Joker. The 45-year-old earlier swooped a BAFTA, Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award this year for his performance. He was up against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Antonio Banderas (Pain & Glory) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).
Parasite was the big winner at the 2020 Academy Awards. In addition to taking home Best Picture, Bong Joon-ho’s masterpiece took home trophies for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, a category that was previously titled Best Foreign Language Film. Parasite is the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars. “I’m so happy to be its first recipient under the new name,” Bong said. “I applaud and support the new direction that this change symbolizes. All our loving crew members and cast members are here with us. Please send a round of applause to the actors and crew members of Parasite.”
“I also thank everyone who allowed me to actualize my vision,” he continued. “Yeah, I’m ready to drink tonight … until next morning.”
Renée Zellweger took home the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of American legend, Judy Garland in Judy. Zellweger was the favourite for the award but faced massive competition from Saoirse Ronan in Little Women, Cynthia Erivo in Harriet, Charlize Theron in Bombshell and Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story. Zellweger was nominated for the best actress Oscar for Bridget Jones’s Diary and Chicago and won a best-supporting actress Oscar in 2004 for Cold Mountain.
“They told me I only had 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week,” Brad Pitt said while accepting his Best Supporting Actor award at Oscars 2020. “I’m thinking maybe Quentin (Tarantino) does a movie about it and in the end, the adults do the right thing.”
Pitt was, of course, joking about how the US Senate voted against allowing witnesses during the impeachment trial that wrapped up last week. Pitt won for his role as stuntman Cliff Booth in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
