Getting To Know Arooj Aftab, The First Pakistani Artist To Bag A Grammy Award

Grammys 2022 wrapped up on a celebratory note. Olivia Rodrigo created history with multiple wins while Jon Batiste appeared as the biggest winner of the evening with 5 awards. This was the first time a Grammy Awards ceremony took place in Las Vegas, and celebs made sure that they looked their best while arriving on the red carpet at the event. However, the highlight of the event became Pakistani artist, Arooj Aftab.


The 37-year-old singer has been gaining global attention for her work of late. Her compositions are a mix of ancient Sufi traditions with hints of folk, jazz and minimalism. She bagged her first Grammy, winning a trophy for her song Mohabbat. She scored the trophy in the Best Global Performance category.

The Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Arooj Aftab has lived in New York for some 15 years. The singer also scored the Best New Artist prize, which will be presented during the main Grammy telecast. “I am beyond thrilled. It feels great. I’ve been very nervous all day. And we’re off to a good start,” she said.

Hailing from Saudi Arabia, she was to born to Pakistani parents and spent her teenage years in Lahore. During her teenage days, she relocated to Boston’s coveted Berklee School of Music. She studied music production and engineering there.

The singer has performed at a number of major New York venues including Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art. She also opened for Mitski at The Brooklyn Steel in 2018. Aftab’s rise to fame is credited to her third studio album Vulture Prince. Former US President Barack Obama included the Grammy-winning track Mohabbat on his 2021 summer favourites list as well.

Arooj Aftab is the first Pakistani woman to receive the prestigious trophy at Grammys 2022 . “And the first ever female Pakistani GRAMMY winner is… Arooj Aftab! Best Global Music Performance: “Mohabbat”,” read the caption announcing her win.
