The movie is helmed by Joseph Kosinski, who directed the upcoming ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Chris Hemsworth and Netflix are out with their latest collaboration, and, no, it is not a sequel to the 2020 film Extraction. The Australian actor will be teaming up with Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett for an original thriller film called Spiderhead, which will release on June 17th.
If the trailer confused you, as it did us, here’s what the official synopsis of the movie reads:
“In a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits. In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not. At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too. But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption take a twistier turn, as Abnesti’s experiments start to push the limits of free will altogether.”
The movie will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who recently helmed the upcoming Top Gun sequel, which is already generating buzz ahead of its release this weekend. Meanwhile, the script is based on a short story by George Saunders and was adapted by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick of Deadpool fame.
From the looks of it, we’re also going to get to see a whole lot of Chris Hemsworth this year, with the 38-year old actor set to reprise his role as Thor in Taika Waititi’s upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. And yes, there’s the much-awaited Extraction sequel that will come out some time this year.
Coming back to Spiderhead, the psychological thriller’s trailer has got audiences curious. The clip has people comparing the movie to Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, which came out in 2014; we have to agree, the resemblance is a bit uncanny.
