Asia’s first LGBT+ video streaming platform which calls itself the continent’s first “gay Netflix” is talking about expanding in India, according to recent media reports. Jay Lin, head of Taipei-based Portico Media which handles the service GagaOOLala said that they plan to move into India following the establishment of better internet and payment technologies.

“It’s a very exciting territory for us … In India, we are hoping to not just stream our service but also find local producers and directors that we can collaborate with,” Lin told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. As of now, GagaOOLala is currently available in 13 countries across Southeast Asia – Hong Kong and Taiwan included.

Why is this a big deal? It was only last year that, following a landmark Supreme Court judgement, “gay sex” was legalised in the country. Certain sections of the draconian Section 377 were smashed down. Bollywood’s first mainstream movie discussing LGBTQ+ relations (Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga) was released to much acclaim and was also a hit at the Box Office. Starring actors like Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Anil Kapoor, the movie was tagged as one of the most sensitive portrayals of gay relationships.

The movies on the site are also available on the GagaOOLala app and you can access them for about $6 a month.
