Kanye West has announced he is running for President. The artiste made the surprising announcement via Twitter, claiming he is going to be part of this year’s Presidential race. But this isn’t the first time he has expressed his desire to be POTUS, and this probably won’t be the last.
West tweeted: “We must now realise the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” Kanye announced via Twitter yesterday. “I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.”
As soon as the tweet was up, equal amount of support and skepticism poured in. A few celebrities immediately chimed in.
Netizens were quick to churn out memes, while some pointed out the technical flaw staring us right in the face. Among the barrage of West 2020 Presidential posters, a few people did some actual research and confirmed that Kanye West’s name does not appear in the list of candidates for the November election, which was then validated by a BBC report.
Furthermore, according to a BallotPedia report, an independent presidential candidate “must petition for placement on the general election ballot in all 50 states as well as Washington DC.” As Yahoo News‘ Hunter Walker tweeted, there are “at least nine states where it’s already too late for an independent candidate to get on the ballot.”
“The states where Kanye is already too late to get on the ballot include Texas, New York, and Illinois, three of the top six in terms of electoral college votes. There are several other deadlines coming up in the next couple weeks,” Walker tweeted.
West has vocalised his desire for becoming President several other times in the past, the earliest account being the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. After that, in November 2019, he once again took to Twitter to announce he will be running for president in 2024.
So, do you believe Kanye West? Based on facts, previous records, and his habit of impulsive tweets, West cannot be taken seriously. Even if he is serious, it will be close to impossible for him to be President this year, but what he can do is use this election to put his foot in the White House’s door. 2020 seems like it is juts going to stay a dream, but who knows, we might just see Kanye West as the President of America in 2024.
