Television’s First Transgender Superhero Is Here – Nia Nal On ‘Supergirl’

Nicole Maines is all set to star as Nia Nal on CW’s Supergirl

The LGBTQ+ gods are being extremely kind to us. After Pose, which featured the largest transgender cast in the history of television and was a huge milestone when it came to POC representation, we shall soon see a transgender superhero on TV.

The New York Times reports that Nicole Maines will star as Nia Nal on CW’s Supergirl. The news was announced at the Comic-Con in San Diego recently where Maines spoke about how its great that trans kids can now have a trans superhero to look up to.

“I’ve been doing a lot of auditions lately because a lot of different shows have been really eager to tell the story of transgender people,” Nicole Maines said onstage, according to the NYT. “It seems only fitting that we have a trans superhero for trans kids to look up to. I wish there was a trans superhero when I was little.” Maines has been advocating for trans rights for quite a while now – in 2014, she successfully sued her school district for not giving her access to the girl’s washroom at her place of education.

So what’s her character like? Nia Nal is the new reporter at CatCo, a media company in the series, who will be guided by superhero Kara Danvers (Supergirl). Maines stated that Nal has a “ferocious drive” to fight those who choose to discriminate and spread hatred. In an interview with Clevver News, Jessica Queller, an executive producer for the show said: “Our show is all about inclusion and representation. It seems the perfect moment in our culture to introduce a trans female superhero.”

And you know what? She’s right. It’s about time trans kids had a superhero who represented them.
