Mark Zuckerberg explained his infamous excessive sunscreen photo that has been used in hilarious memes since last year.

During an Instagram live session, Zuckerberg explained the reason behind that interesting photo that made rounds over the internet. He notes that he lathered his face with an excessive amount of sunscreen in an attempt to throw off paparazzi that were intruding on his vacation in Hawaii last summer.

“I really should have thought that one through more. I noticed there was this paparazzi guy following us and, so I was like, ‘Oh I don’t want him to recognize me so you know what I’m gonna do? I’m just gonna put a ton of sunscreen on my face.’ And that backfired.” He went on to say that he is glad that people had a good laugh about the picture. “I’m glad people can laugh about it. I laugh about it and I think it’s pretty funny,” he said. “But when you’re eFoiling down the coast of Hawaii, and it’s beautiful and it just feels like it’s awesome – and then you come back online and you see that’s the photo, that’s what you look like – it’s like, OK. Alright. That’s maybe quite a bit more sunscreen than I thought I was wearing,” he had told previously about the famous photo.

The Facebook CEO went on to admit “no one needs to be wearing that much sunscreen” and shared how he feels about the photo now. “I’m glad people can laugh about it. I laugh about it and I think it’s pretty funny.”

Photos of Facebook CEO surfing in Hawaii went viral in July 2020 and were quickly converted into creative memes on Twitter and other social media platforms. While it looked like any other picture, netizens noticed the excess white sunscreen the Facebook CEO applied to his face. It didn’t take time for internet users to compare the white look to pop culture characters.
