Taapsee Pannu has announced that her upcoming biopic on Indian cricketer Mithali Raj, titled Shabaash Mithu will release in theatres on July 15.
Directed by Srijit Mukherji and written by Priya Aven, Shabaash Mithu is a coming-of-age story about women cricketers in India. The film will chronicle the highs and lows, setbacks, and moments of euphoria in Mithali Raj’s life. The story will also track her journey from being an 8-year-old girl with a dream to becoming a cricketing legend.
The celebrated skipper of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team has a career spanning 23 years, 7 consecutives 50s in ODIs and has led India in 4 World Cups.
Taking to Twitter, Taapsee Pannu shared, “There is nothing more powerful than a girl with a dream and a plan to realise it! This is a story of one such girl who chased her dream with a bat in this ‘Gentleman’s Game’ #ShabaashMithu The Unheard Story Of Women In Blue will be in cinemas on 15th July 2022.”
Produced by Viacom18 Studios, the film will also feature actor Vijay Raaz.
In 2019, while announcing her association with the film, Taapsee Pannu tweeted pictures with Mithali Raj and wrote: “Happy Birthday Captain. On this Birthday, I don’t know what gift I can give you but this promise that I shall give it all I have to make sure you will be proud of what you see of yourself on screen with Shabaash Mithu. PS_ I’m all prepared to learn the ‘cover drive’.”
Shabaash Mithu will be Taapsee Pannu’s first theatrical release post her 2020 movie Thappad. During the pandemic, the 34-year-old actor featured in four movies — Haseen Dilruba, Annabelle Sethupathi, Rashmi Rocket, and Looop Lapeta, which were all released on OTT platforms. Next, she has Blurr, Dobaaraa, Dunki, and Woh Ladki Hai Kahaan? lined up in the pipeline.
