The second trailer of the 2023 movie, The Super Mario Bros. was released a few hours ago, barely a month after the first look was dropped. Based on the popular video game series, the latest movie marks the third installment from the Mario series and is slated for a U.S. release on April 7, 2023. The movie has the voice of popular actors like Chris Patt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day and Kevin Michael Richardson, and the like. This trailer in question gives a glimpse of Toad, Luigi, and the super adorable Princess Peach.
To give a bit of context, Nintendo, the Japanese multinational videogame company, was in talks with Illumination founder Chris Meledandri for a Mario film a couple of years ago. Later, in 2018, they announced the collaboration, only to kickstart production in 2020.
Golden Globe awardee Anya Taylor-Joy plays the role of Peach in the movie. In an interview, Taylor-Joy revealed that she began playing video games after bagging the role. “But once I booked the job and my friends were so excited [for it], we bought all of, you know, the Mario Kart world and we really went for it. My favorite way to play is at the arcade, though. I’ve now become, like, a hardcore adult arcade individual,” revealed the 26-year-old.
On the other hand, Charles Martinet has been the voice of Mario’s character since the start. In an interview in 2021, Martinet expressed his desire to be zeroed in for the franchise’s future projects. In August 2021, it was announced that he would be the voice of Spike, who is Mario’s boss in the film. Fast forward to September 2022, the other cast members were announced by Pratt and Taylor Joy.
American actor Khary Payton was roped in to give the character of Penguin King his voice, right in the middle of the pandemic, owing to which he recorded his lines in his closet. While Payton was unsure if his part would make it to the movie, he never hesitated to support Pratt. When the news of Pratt parting his association with Mario was out, it divided the internet. While a few felt there was a need for change, many others wished for the old charm to be retained.
