“She (Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, the Vampire Slayer) was an amazing teenage idol. But what if at 13, I had seen someone who looked like me? The only person that I saw at that time who was culturally representative of me was Apu from The Simpsons, and he was played by a white guy, which I found out much later, obviously. But as a teenager, I didn’t see representation of myself in American pop culture or even global pop culture outside of the stereotypical caricatures of South Asians,” said Priyanka Chopra Jonas in an exclusive interview to Variety.
Now, at the age of 37, our favourite desi girl gets to do just that. According to the Variety report, Chopra Jonas has signed a two-year multimillion-dollar first-look television deal with Amazon.
In 2015, Chopra Jonas took a huge step towards global domination when she headlined ABC’s Quantico. It was the first time a South Asian female actor was headlining a show for a major network.
Since then, America and the world has been obsessed with the actor. It helps that she’s sassy, unabashedly confident, and downright gorgeous. Her acting skills, which were already earning her high praise amongst Indian critics, began to be noticed abroad as well.
“My Amazon television deal is a global deal, so I can do Hindi language, I can do English language, I can do whatever language I want,” Chopra Jonas added.
As of now, the actor is headling and producing Sheela, a feature that is based on Netflix’s incredibly popular original, Wild Wild Country. Chopra Jonas will star as Ma Anand Sheela. Besides that, she’ll also be seen next in Netflix’s We Can Be Heroes and is shooting for The Matrix 4.
