In less than 24 hours from now, the 2024 edition of the much-awaited T20 World Cup will kickstart, with a clash between the hosts the United States and Canada, at Grand Prairie Stadium in Canada. This is the first time an ICC tournament is being co-hosted by the United States. The excitement is at its peak, and so is the uncertainty, for the conditions on offer are pretty much alien to every participant. The Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, decided to play it safe by selecting a squad that has the proper mix of aggression and control. Anything less than a championship title would be an underachievement for the side. We look at five of the leading run-getters in the T20 World Cup.

Gautam Gambhir

Long before donning the multiple hats of mentor, broadcaster, and provocateur, Gautam Gambhir used to be a proficient run-maker, always stepping up for the team. It was his sedate half-century, 75 off 54 deliveries, that paved the way for India's triumph at T20 World Cup final in 2007. With 524 runs in T20 World Cups, Gambhir is the fifth leading run-getter for India.

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni has always been the hallmark of consistency, but he is form flickered a lot in this format. Having played six T20 World Cups after leading the team to their maiden title in 2007, Dhoni, despite being a lower-order batter, features high in the list, thanks to his 529 runs that came at an average of 35, and a strike rate of 123.

Yuvraj Singh

He has to be there! The player who was arguably way ahead of the time, bringing in dynamism to an otherwise conservative batting line-up. In the 2007 title-winning campaign, Yuvraj batted at a strike rate of 194, and blasted six sixes off an over against Stuard Broad, making history.

Rohit Sharma

The current Indian captain is second only to the former Indian captain in the run-scoring list of the T20 World Cup. Sharma has featured in every edition of this tournament, after winning it in 2007, and amassing a staggering amount of runs, close to 1000, with his best coming against Australia in 2009. Rohit is likely playing his last T20 World Cup, and he would love to depart on a winning note.

Virat Kohli

A titan of the game, Kohli stands tall as the leading run-scorer for India in T20 World Cup tournaments. His batting prowess is a masterclass in precision and dominance, his every stroke a symphony of power and finesse. His ability to adapt to any situation, to take on the best bowlers in the world with unwavering confidence, sets him apart as a true match-winner. Kohli has scored more than 1000 runs, and will have an opportunity to add more.
