So, for some weird reason, a newspaper asked Shilpa Shetty to comment on the ICSE board’s decision to include Harry Potter and other modern fiction in the curriculum. She responded with this:

“Books like Lord Of The Rings (LOTR) and Harry Potter as part of the syllabus is a great move because it cultivates imagination and creativity at a young age.They should include books like Little Women, as it encourages respect towards women at a young age. Even a book like Animal Farm can teach the little ones to love and care for animals.”

Okay, then.

Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller

Why: Because it is crucial for children to be good at geography. How else will you travel the whole world? Also, the tropics are amazing. They produce delicious fruits which later become delicious cocktails. But that’s for when you grow up, kids.

Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie

Why: Because this is an Indian version of the Famous Five or Secret Seven, only with poverty and snake charmers thrown in. Hence, relatable. There’s a dog too.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Why: It’s the inspiring tale of how a young housefly becomes the ruler of a whole dumpster. Should be the handbook for aspiring Presidents.

My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk

 Why: Because it is a fantastic colouring book for toddlers.

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

Why: For those kids who don’t see the world in black and white. Don’t let them stop you from colouring outside the lines, child.
