In an act of dissent against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, Zakariya Mohammed, the maker of the national award-winning movie Sudani from Nigeria has announced that he will be boycotting the National Awards function that’ll take place on the 23rd of December.

“Protesting against CAB and National Register of Citizens, I, as the director of Sudani from Nigeria, will stay away from the National Award ceremony along with scriptwriter Muhsin Parari and the producers of the film,” Zakariya Mohammed wrote on Facebook. This is Mohammed’s debut movie which portrays the life and times of a local football coach who is played by actor Soubin Shahir.

India’s Citizenship Amendment Act grants citizenship to all Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and Parsi immigrants from neighbouring Muslim majority countries Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh who’ve arrived in the country before the 31st of December, 2014. According to Livemint, those belonging to the religious communities belonging above will not be deported for not having the requisite documents. This Act has stirred controversy with people alleging that this will alter the idea of India because of its exclusion of Muslims.

There were also major protests following an incident where police forces marched into Jamia Milia Islamia University in Delhi and fired tear gas into libraries and hostels.
