On Monday night at Wankhede Stadium, the IPL clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, pitted two of the most high-profile siblings in cricket against each other. Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya. They started their journey together, at Mumbai Indians, before their careers took different turns. Hardik achieved even greater heights after leaving Mumbai, winning the IPL title with Gujarat Titans in his first season as a captain, and then taking them to another final the next year. His incredible success compelled Mumbai Indians to take him back, and appoint him as a captain. Krunal, meanwhile, played for Lucknow for two seasons, before joining RCB this season. When these two met last night, Hardik slammed two towering sixes against his elder brother. But it was Krunal who had a last laugh, who defended the target in the last over. Take a look at some of the most iconic siblings in the history of IPL.
Irfan Pathan & Yusuf Pathan
Irfan and Yusuf Pathan were among the first sibling pairs to shine in the IPL, bringing their all-round skills to the fore. Irfan, a left-arm pacer with a knack for swing, debuted in 2008 with Kings XI Punjab, later playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Gujarat Lions until 2017. He took 80 wickets in 103 matches. Yusuf, the elder brother, was a hard-hitting batsman and off-spinner who started with Rajasthan Royals, winning the inaugural IPL in 2008. He then joined Kolkata Knight Riders for seven seasons, lifting titles in 2012 and 2014, before finishing with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019.
Michael Hussey & David Hussey
The Hussey brothers from Australia brought finesse and versatility to the IPL. Michael, dubbed "Mr. Cricket," debuted with Chennai Super Kings in 2008, playing a pivotal role in their 2010 and 2011 titles with his consistent top-order batting. He also represented Mumbai Indians in 2015. David, a dynamic middle-order batsman and handy off-spinner, began with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008, later joining Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings until 2014. He scored 1,322 runs in 64 games.
Albie Morkel & Morne Morkel
South African siblings Albie and Morne Morkel left a towering mark on the IPL with their contrasting skills. Albie, a powerful all-rounder, debuted with Chennai Super Kings in 2008, contributing to their 2010 and 2011 triumphs with his big-hitting and medium-pace bowling. He also played for Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rising Pune Supergiant, scoring 974 runs and taking 85 wickets in 95 matches. Morne, a lanky fast bowler, started with Rajasthan Royals in 2009, later joining Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders, where he won the 2014 title. He claimed 77 wickets in 70 games with his pace and bounce.
Dwayne Bravo & Darren Bravo
The Bravo brothers from the West Indies brought Caribbean flair to the IPL, though their journeys differed vastly. Dwayne, a T20 legend, debuted with Mumbai Indians in 2008 before becoming a Chennai Super Kings icon, winning titles in 2011, 2018, and 2021. He retired as the IPL’s highest wicket-taker. Darren, a stylish left-hander, had a brief stint, playing one match for Deccan Chargers in 2012 and joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017 without significant impact.
Brendon McCullum & Nathan McCullum
New Zealand’s McCullum brothers added distinct flavors to the IPL. Brendon, an explosive opener, set the tone with a blazing 158* in the IPL’s inaugural match for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008. He returned to KKR for their 2012 title, also playing for Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Gujarat Lions, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, scoring 2,880 runs in 109 matches. Nathan, a crafty off-spinner and lower-order batsman, had a quieter stint with Pune Warriors India and Sunrisers Hyderabad, playing just two games and taking one wicket.
Siddarth Kaul & Uday Kaul
Siddarth Kaul was a right-arm fast bowler, who debuted with Delhi Daredevils in 2008, later played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad (where he excelled), and Royal Challengers Bangalore. His pace and accuracy made him a reliable option. Uday, a left-handed opener and wicketkeeper, had a shorter run, playing for Kings XI Punjab but not achieving anything substantial.
Shaun Marsh & Mitchell Marsh
Shaun Marsh debuted with Kings XI Punjab in 2008, lighting up the tournament with his explosive batting, and topping the run charts with 616 runs. He scored 2,477 runs in 71 matches, though his form dipped later. Mitchell, an all-rounder with pace bowling and power-hitting, played for multiple franchises. He is currently associated with Delhi Capitals.
Hardik Pandya & Krunal Pandya
The Pandya brothers have been IPL stalwarts, starring together for Mumbai Indians before they were separated. In the ongoing season, Hardik is leading Mumbai, while Krunal is playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Sam Curran & Tom Curran
English all-rounders Sam and Tom Curran brought youthful energy to the IPL. Sam, a left-arm pacer and handy batsman, debuted with Kings XI Punjab in 2019, later joining Chennai Super Kings (2020-21) and Punjab Kings again in 2023. Tom, a right-arm fast bowler, played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore between 2018 and 2022.
Marco Jansen & Duan Jansen
South African twins Marco and Duan Jansen made IPL history as the first twin siblings to feature in the league. Marco, a towering left-arm pacer, debuted with Mumbai Indians in 2021, later joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022, taking 28 wickets in 20 matches with his pace and bounce. Duan, also a left-armer, debuted for Mumbai Indians in 2023 against Kolkata Knight Riders, playing one game without a wicket.
